Episode 23: Rocket Mass Woodcock

It's the number 23 and instead of slowly going insane like Jim Carrey in the 2007 movie by the same name, we're just hanging out on the back porch, surrounded by hummingbirds, horny chickens, and the serene landscape of Appalachian Pennsylvania.

This week, we talk about maintaining and building soil fertility via composting. Here's a link to our compost tumbler.

We also discuss plans for heating the greenhouse with a rocket mass heater.

If one were to prepare a hummingbird for dinner, would it taste like the Ortolan Bunting as portrayed in the Showtime series Billions?

This lead to a brief tangent on the European Woodcock, which is traditionally skewered with it's own beak when prepared for consumption.

Here are a couple of photos of back when we raised rabbits. Sara mentioned that I'd carry them out to their pasture pen in a basket and I tried to describe the Matryoshka Nesting Doll rabbit circus I built to prove Joel Salatin wrong.

And finally, The Jacktown Fair.

This was a great episode. We covered a lot of ground and I may have talked myself into enough projects to last well into next year. If you wanna give the podcast a listen, go to tabardfarm.com and click subscription at the top of the page. It's $5 per month and new episodes drop every Thursday. I enjoy it so much, I'd do it even if you didn't listen.
