Episode 24: Rain, rain, go away
It's rained for a few days in a row, so we've reverted to our slovenly, natural state of being where we talk about inconsequential technological issues, decadent office furniture, and obscure television references.
Straight up, here are links to the stuff we talked about in this episode:
Plex Media Server - We run this on an old computer to serve up EVERY TV SHOW AND MOVIE YOU CAN IMAGINE. Seriously... you remember "Small Wonder," the 1980's sit-com about a family with a robot daughter? Yeah, got that. How about every episode of the Twilight Zone? Basically, you point the media server software at a folder or folders of files and it makes it available over the local network and the greater internet for the Plex application to access and stream to devices from your phone, tablet, laptop, or living room TV.
To illustrate the value of Plex, I referenced two obscure 80's shows Jake and the Fat Man and Scarecrow and Mrs. King . I only remember these shows being advertised on broadcast TV when I was a wee lad. Click the titles to see the wikipedia entries for these two shows.
Sara mentioned sleep tracking via the Whoop Strap . A few years ago, Joe Rogan had his friends, Ari Shaffir, Tom Segura, and Bert Kreischer participate in Sober October with a fitness competition component. They all used Whoop Straps to track their exercise. This is basically a fitness tracker that you wear on your wrist and sync the data up to Whoop's servers to track your progress.
Bob mentioned a bunch of crap he wants to get for his office to facilitate his writing and content-creation phase of professional development. Among those are clicky clacky keyboards from WASD and Herman Miller office chairs (particularly the aeron and eames ). After we recorded, I sent a message to John Siracusa and found out that his chair is, in fact, an Embody, from Herman Miller.
Sara sent me the video of the "impale yourself through the butthole via a barstool" since we mentioned it.
We talked about good comedy specials like Andrew Schultz's upcoming special ... and dumbass shit like Hannah Gadsby's Nanette special, which is more like a woke Ted Talk about feelings and childhood trauma.
And finally, the great John Cena apologizes to the Chinese Communist Party for acknowledging the existence of Taiwan.
